Medical Treatment of Allergies
After allergy testing is completed and allergies are found, avoidance of these allergens is the best treatment if possible. For example, if a patient is allergic to dust and dust mites a patient can buy special covers to cover their mattress and pillowcase to kill the dust mites. Animals can also be avoided as well if allergies are found for cats and dogs.
Allergy medications can help reduce your immune system reaction and ease symptoms. The drugs you use depend on the type of allergy you have. They can include over-the-counter or prescription medications in the form of oral antihistamines, nasal sprays or eye drops. Some common allergy medications include corticosteroids, antihistamines, decongestants, intranasal steroid, or antihistamine sprays, and leukotriene modifiers.
Often both medication and allergens avoidance are usually used to control allergies. When this is not effective than allergy shots are considered.
